Small Business Consultancy & Advice

Business consultancy is very often offered by those who have never woken up in a cold sweat worrying about a VAT payment, dreaded Xmas because of low turnover or who never take holidays because they’re afraid to leave the business. It’s a lonely walk running a business, and as the saying goes, ‘Heavy is the head that wears the crown.’

Making hard Decisions

Very often, the answers can lay before your very eyes, but it’s so difficult to see the wood for the trees when you’re busy firefighting. Decision making is one of the most difficult things to come to terms with, especially when there are tough decisions to be made. Most small business owners care about their staff and their job prospects which only serve to make some decisions even harder to make. Unfortunately, employees rarely reciprocate the feeling and without seeing the bigger picture, will usually act in their own interest which is understandable.

Running a Business can be a Lonely Business

I’ve lost countless night’s sleep worrying about lack of turnover, paying the wages, VAT & tax bills without ever really taking the necessary holidays to re-charge. But I’ve also had family involved in the business so I didn’t feel alone; for those who don’t, the isolation can be incredibly stressful. More often than not, the opportunity to discuss the problems with someone who has experienced the same issues is the first step. To get it off your chest without someone saying something like ‘Don’t worry, I’m sure it will be ok.’ can be like bursting a huge boil.

Dealing with the same old Business Issues

Every business may be different, but the main problems that beset them are usually the same. Lack of sales; poor cash-flow; non-performing staff; lack of a business plan, underperforming or no website; lack of digital marketing expertise or strategy, and competitors taking customers from underneath your nose. These are just some of the issues that business owners and managers have to confront with on a day to day basis.

The Light at the end of the Tunnel

The good news is that there are always practical steps to take to fight back. The first one is to take a good long hard look at your business without the emotion (not an easy task). Looking at your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats will start to give you a picture of where you stand in the cold light of day. This should start to lay the foundation for a business plan regardless of whether you’re starting a business or whether you are established.

Having a Reset

Having a ‘reset’ is something many business owners struggle with because they have been used to doing things the same way for a long time. But every business should have a business plan which shouldn’t be a box-ticking exercise; it should be a blueprint of how you intend to grow the business over a given time-frame. If you hit your markers and KPI’s (key performance indicators), it should mean that you are in control; if you don’t, then the plan will give you the ‘wiggle’ room to alter and adjust your objectives and either amend them or straighten up the ship.

It’s your business; I will listen and come back to you with my considered thoughts, the rest is up to you. I won’t charge you for the meeting, it’s my opportunity to understand a little about your business in the hope that at some point, you would need my services.
